It’s important to schedule a self care night frequently to allow your mind, body, and soul to relax. Before the day ends, you need some nighttime self care.
Life, children, and careers can all lead to feeling burnt out. We are all being pulled in 20 different directions and everyone needs us. We leave our cups dry after pouring into everyone else.
Because life can have us feeling jaded, shaded, and faded, we have to schedule time to recharge and refill our cups (literally and figuratively). Nighttime is a great time for a self care routine because the house is still.
When my kids go to bed, I take some time for myself and enjoy the quiet or work on a passion project (like this blog). Now that, I also have a part-time job it’s even more imperative that I find time to recharge.
When everyone depends on you in some fashion, it’s really easy to give up on the things that made you feel good. However, it’s only a matter of time before the feeling of burnout catches up to you.
This post is all about how to make a self care night in 10 insanely easy steps.
Self Care Night
What is a self-care night?
A self care night is where you schedule a block of time in the evening to relax. Whether that is to unwind with a glass of blueberry wine and a book, meditation or prayer, an at-home mani-pedi, or eating Chipotle and watching your favorite YouTuber.

This a scheduled block of time where you do not worry about bills, work, children, or anyone else. This is time for you to relax and restore. To rest and reset your mind, body, and soul. Think of it like a very small vacation for yourself.
What are the 3 rules of self-care?
The 3 rules of self-care are: Relax, Reset, and Restore. And honestly, it’s preferable on a budget. We are not in the market to spend a million bucks but we still want to feel like it.
How do you prioritize self care in your daily routine to promote a healthy lifestyle?
In today’s world, it is hard to make time to focus on yourself. However, if it’s important to you, you’ll make time. I have a family member who wakes up around 4:00 am to make sure she has time with Jesus. It’s important that she has that time with Him.
You can adopt that same mindset for your self care routine. Schedule time at least once a month to cater to yourself. Some may call it “maintenance” day others may call it their “spa” day. You schedule everything else, you are just as important.
How to Have The Perfect Self Care Night
1. Schedule your night in advance
As mentioned before, you have to make time for yourself. Pick a night where the family has nothing planned and where kids can go to bed earlier. Think of this as a date night for yourself.
Picking a night in advance also allows you to prep for your night. As well as have something to look forward to. Give yourself time because your night should be as stress-free as possible.

2. Prep for your care night routine
Gather everything that you may need to relax. This includes snacks, drinks, DIY skin treatments, and more. You’ll need everything from hair to toes. So invest in some quality equipment that’ll last you for every spa day.

3. Block out social media & notifications
I cannot think of anything less relaxing than having my phone ding while I am trying to center myself. Although social media can be entertaining, oftentimes it leaves us feeling negative about our lives.
This self care evening is all about you and not what Sally is doing with her trillions of dollars. This is the time to reflect on all the good in your life and to have your cortisol levels mellow out.
4. Set an intention
Why do you want to have a self-care night? What are you hoping to gain from this night? Whether you are trying to gain mental clarity, relaxation or to practice gratitude, there needs to be an intention.
5. Set the mood
To create an experience all your own, you’ll want to set the mood. Dim the lights and have candles (flameless work well too) light up your environment. Your night self care should help build up the mood and put your mind at ease.
Set your oil diffuser to a warm light setting and use your favorite relaxing oil. My pick is lavender oil but you can use sandalwood, clary sage, or orange. Research which oils may be best for you and your family. Keep in mind that some oils are toxic to pets.
6. Tidy your space
Physical clutter can lead to mental clutter and it’s hard to relax when there is clutter everywhere. Cleaning your house can be a form of self care. You deserve to live in a clean and tidy space.
The smell of cleanness is my therapy. Nothing makes my mind feel at ease quite like a clean and tidy living space.
7. Curate a relaxing playlist or motivational podcasts
My mom took me to a tea party when I was 25, I absolutely loved it (and recommend it 100%). They played live classical piano music. It was so relaxing. I went home and found classical music versions of my favorite songs.
Maybe you like listening to heavy metal or hip hop, whatever puts you in a great mood will go on your playlist. Make sure you have a quality speaker (Amazon has an amazing speaker here, I use it religiously) and you’ll be relaxing in no time.
Podcasts can also provide entertainment, education, or motivate you. There are true crime podcasts and podcasts about creating a life all your own. {Read: The Ultimate 25 Podcasts For Moms: Everything You Need to Get in The Zone}
8. Shop for your favorite snacks
I just discovered brownie brittle and I will never not buy it. It tastes like the crispy edges of an oven-baked brownie. What are some snacks that make you happy and put you in a blissful mood?
Or what is your favorite drink, coffee, or tea? You can even make spa water or agua frescas evening self care routine. Nothing wrong with having a guilty pleasure every now and then.
9. Wear cute and cozy pajamas
Snuggle up in your favorite slippers and pajamas. After a warm bath (or shower), you’ve moisturized, shaved, and rejuvenated your skin; nothing feels better than slipping on clean, comfortable clothes.
Amazon, Target, and even Walmart all have comfortable pajamas to feel brand new. I am a long sleeve and pants type of girl but you can wear whatever feels right.
10. Journal and reflect on your day, week, month, and/or year
This has to be one of my favorite routine ideas. Journaling helps quiet my mind when I start to spiral. Whenever I read my past journal entries, it allows me to remember how blessed I truly am. Journaling can be a nightly self care routine.

I wouldn’t just leave this to one night but journal every night. It would be beneficial to see your progress through the weeks. Journaling every night will help promote more restful sleep. Your mind isn’t cluttered with thoughts because it’s now on paper. This will allow you to dissect and navigate through your feelings.
It is important to create a self-care night routine to unwind and relax. You need to pour into yourself as much as you pour into others. You are important and you make time for what’s important.
